Prenota un hotel a Rodi
Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese islands, and is the capital. It was once part of the Roman and Byzantine Empires, before being conquered by the Knights of St. John, who occupied Rhodes from 1306 to 1522.
Close to the Turkish coast, Rhodes was an important maritime crossroads in the eastern Aegean sea. Under the Greeks, the Byzantines, the Knights and the Ottomans, the island became a sort of free port populated by many ethnic groups. Like other islands in the Dodecanese, Rhodes became part of modern Greece only in 1948, five years after the end of the long Italian domination, whose signs can be noticed almost everywhere even today.
It takes its name from the nymph Rhodes (Rodon in Greek means rose, the flower of which the island is rich). Roses, oleander and palm trees give the city the appearance of a huge garden in flower and lush. When you arrive in Rhodes, the impact of the past and the present of the island is immediate. Most of the monuments, hotels, shops and entertainment are concentrated in the capital. But the island is so small (not more than 77 kilometres in length) that it can be easily explored with day trips, by car or motorbike.
The ancient fortified city and the Byzantine area, showing signs of the Italian occupation, are the two distinct faces of the capital. But the contrasts are everywhere: sand and rocks, bare and green landscapes. And then, the white Lindos with its impressive Acropolis and the majestic valley invaded every summer by colourful butterflies.
Rich with beautiful sandy beaches, amazing trails and a lively nightlife, Rhodes attracts thousands of tourists every year.
