
A fortress within a fortress, this was the residence of the 19 Grand Masters of the Knights’ Order but also shelter for the population in times of danger. Built in the fourteenth century, it has survived earthquakes and sieges but was damaged in an accident with explosive powder in 1856. Restored by the Italians who took the island from 1912 to 1945, it is now also home to two permanent exhibitions on ancient and medieval Rhodes.
