From the port of Mandraki in less than two hours of caique (departure in front of New Market, each day at 9) you can reach the island of Simi, great for rocks and pure sea, with a village nestled at the end of a bay where you can hire a small boat for the excursion of the coasts. Going to Simi, the caique also stops at the solitary monastery of Panormitis which has a guest house flanked by two taverns.
Another fantastic island, Chalki, is still close to Rhodes, in front of the village of Skala Kameirou on the west coast. It was an island of sponge fishermen before they move to Florida in early 1900. Its port, Nimporio, is a gem of the Mediterranean.
